Movie Critique on the Industrial Organizational Psychology present in Antz Introduction The 1998 film Antz is an excellent depiction of the industrial and organizational work force. Being that the film is a Dream Works animation, it has a simple and attention grabbing plot that is given to the viewer through the perspective of a hero, and in this context an colony ant worker named Z (Darnell et al., 1998). This peculiar, open-minded ant portrayed several topics related to industrial organizational psychology such as leadership, occupational stress, and job satisfaction. In addition to the prevalent presence of industrial psychology that can be seen in the main character, other characters and details of the plot are representative of industrial psychology as well. Elements such as organizational commitment and employee selection are intriguingly exemplified through this moralistic story of ants (Darnell et al., 1998). Child care and observation Essay Observation is very important in young children because that is how you get to know a child better. While observing how a child interacts with their peers, adults, and how they behave in different settings, you are getting to know the child without speaking to them. It may be important to observe a child but at the same time it may mislead you into being judgmental, to soon. For instance, if you observe a child misbehaving, not getting along with the other children or talking back to the teacher, you might get the impression that he/she is a bad child and you might treat and act differently with that particular child. From my personal experiences, I have to come to the conclusion that it doesnt always work the way I believe when observing a child. I strongly feel that in order to get to know a child you should not spend most of your time observing him/her. Interacting with the child gives off better results. Not once or twice, this should be a consistent thing. For example, in room seven we have a child by the name of Thomas which most of us have heard about him. He appears to be very aggressive and angry from what we have observed. Even though the child may be difficult at times, I cannot turn my back on him and give up because of this. We can only observe what lies in front of us. No one really knows what goes on when the child is home with his parents. He might be going through some really hard times with his family and this is how he is coping with it but, we really dont know and that is why it is very important to ask questions and speak to the child because your observations many. At the daycare, I try not to let my observations take over a situation. If I see hit Gaspar rather then jump to conclusions and scold Vincent, I talk to the both of them and ask questions, like, Why did you hit him? What made you so angry that you felt you had to hit him? How did that make you feel? so on and so forth. Observations are very important but it is not good to be judgmental when observing because you may be observing a child who in reality is a good kid but is acting aggressively because he/she is having a bad day and you might just categorize the child wrongfully. Part #2 1.Taylor is trying to fill a bucket with water. It has a hole in the bottom. He begins to fill it and water dribbles out he gets frustrated and begins to cry loudly. Taylor feels helpless in this situation and is unhappy that things are not going her way. She needs to know that there are other options. The way I would handle it is by telling her, Taylor, there is no need to cry, there is a hole in the bottom of the bucket and that is why the water is coming out. I understand that you might be a little frustrated because you want to play wit the water but lets not cry. I have a solution, why dont we go inside and see if we can fix it. If it is not fixable then we can go and look for another bucket so we can play with the water. 2. A new child enters the center and speaks no English. He is crying after his mom just left. How do you communicate what are the expectations of this child to follow the routine and interact. In a situation like this, I would have to pay more attention to this child because even though he/she may feel alone because mommy is gone, I want the child to feel secure that someone is there trying to meet their needs. Are you becoming increasingly lazy, fat? Thesis/ I'd like to show you that we're all in need of exercise. Overview Now is the time to get started so that we can enjoy the health and psychological benefits the rest of our lives. Motivation I'm assuming that none of you will argue that exercise is harmful. You'll agree that exercise is beneficial. However, I'm not so sure all of us are actually exercising. I'd like to tell you, then, not how to exercise, but to persuade you to go out and get some exercise. Transition (First, I'd like to tell you why I'm so concerned about our inactivity.) Thought Pattern: PROBLEM-SOLUTION Body Problem: I. Lack of exercise is harmful to our health. A. Cardiovascular disease, the nation's leading cause of death, is caused by inactivity. 1. Clogged arteries and veins are a result of inactivity. (example) 2. Excess fat also caused by inactivity leads to a higher incidence of heart disease. (explanation and example) Internal (Statistically, then, you will die at an earlier age if summary you do not exercise.) Transition (Now some of you might be wondering why I'm preaching to a bunch of 20 year olds.) B. College students are not as healthy as we are often lead to believe. 1. High school seniors are in better health than we are. (survey) 2. We are on the threshold of decline as our level of activity drops. (explanation) C. This change is correlated with the changes in our lifestyles that occur between high school and college. 1. Most of us have less time to run around because we are studying more. (explanation) 2. Many of us have given up the sports we used to play competitively. (example) 3. Now that we're in college we have less motivation to exercise. (explanation) Internal (The point here is that exercise for us must come from summary within. But, statistically, that hasn't been happening.) Transition (This point becomes increasingly significant as we realize that this stage in our lives is a primary force in determining our future behavior.) D. Our inactivity now may lead to inactivity later. 1. Our choices in brand of beer will be carried on through the coming years. (analogy) 2. By being inactive now we are getting ourselves into a rut of being inactive. This rut can be avoided, but it is difficult. (explanation) Internal (I have shown you that by not exercising we are decreasing summary our life spans, and at this particular time in our lives we are especially vulnerable to becoming out of shape. This may carry with us for years, until it is too late. Transition (A fair question to ask here is: What is so great about exercise? If it's such a pain in the ass, it's not worth living a few more years. To this I would respond that it isn't such a pain.) Solution II. Exercise is not a large investment,but the yield is very high. We should all exercise to take advantage of this. A. To exercise, you don't have to lift weights for hours on end or join the wrestling team. Exercise can take as little as 15 minutes a day. (statistic) B. One advantage of being healthy is that your body needs less sleep. This may more than make up for the time it takes to exercise. (explanation) C. Studies show exercise clears your thoughts so that you can be more efficient. (testimony) D. Also, you'll feel better. 1. When hurrying to class you won't get winded so easily. (example) 2. You won't get sick as easily since exercise increases the body's resistance. (testimony and explanation) E. More important, however, are the effects on your body you don't feel. 1. Increasing your cardiovascular strength increases your heart's stroke efficiency. (testimony) 2. Researchers at San Diego State have found that increases in exercise slow the onset of senility. As you might expect, this quip by Ricky Gervais stirred strong responses when it was posted on Facebook. Some commenters were amused by it, but others most definitely were not. What caught my attention was not the heated religious discussion that Gervaisââ¬â¢s irreverent comment provoked, but the grammatical scuffle that erupted over his erroneous use of itââ¬â¢s. Commenters were able to ââ¬Å"Likeâ⬠individual replies. The first reader to point out that ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s feelingsâ⬠should read ââ¬Å"its feelingsâ⬠received 103 Likes. The comment that dismissed the objectionââ¬âââ¬Å"Its basic grammar and was probably a typo. Who cares?â⬠ââ¬âreceived only 7 Likes. Is it too much to hope that this little pollunscientific as it issuggests that members of the reading public who care about the correct use of itââ¬â¢s may outnumber those who donââ¬â¢t? Probably. Something this exchange does illustrate is that typographical errors, misspellings, and grammatical faults distract readers from serious discussionsââ¬âeven in that land of linguistic anarchy we call ââ¬Å"social media.â⬠Iââ¬â¢d be lying if I said Iââ¬â¢ve never typed itââ¬â¢s where the context called for its. Iââ¬â¢ve probably even allowed at least one disgraceful itââ¬â¢s to slip into print. For that reason, I must be grateful to the class of readers who can give a misused itââ¬â¢s the benefit of the doubt. Such tolerant folks assume it must be an unintended typo. After all, doesnââ¬â¢t everyone know that itââ¬â¢s is a contraction of it is and not a possessive adjective? Alas, some typos are more forgivable than others, even in comment threads. The accidental typing of hte or teh for the, for example, will go unremarked by all but the most mean-spirited nit-picking troll. Itââ¬â¢s for its, on the other hand, elicits a visceral reaction in some readers. They canââ¬â¢t help it. No matter how deep or serious a discussion, a misplaced itââ¬â¢s or its will almost certainly bring it to a grinding halt. Bottomline: Whether you think it matters or not, if you want to keep readersââ¬â¢ attention focused on the topic at hand, make sure you havenââ¬â¢t misused itââ¬â¢s before clicking ââ¬Å"Replyâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Submit.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Simply enforcing the laws presently on the books and deporting illegal aliens is an economic necessity that would also result in decreased crime rates. Illegal immigrants receive more from public monies than they contribute which lowers the standard of living for legal citizens. Illegal immigrants contribute greatly to the overall population growth and health care, education and employment are the most impacted. Salaries are driven down by illegal immigrants willing to work for much less while their children, illegal and legal, overcrowd the schools. Itââ¬â¢s the U.S. taxpayer who is sent the bill for their health care services as well. In addition, the large influx of illegal aliens burdens the already inadequate number of units classified as affordable housing and other welfare resources such as energy, water and land usage (ââ¬Å"Illegal Immigrationâ⬠, 2003). Those that support amnesty of illegal aliens currently in the U.S. argue that deportations would result in the splitting of families. Children born in this country could stay but their illegal parents would have to leave. They also express that it would be unfair for a child that has lived in the U.S. all their life to be suddenly thrust into the conditions of a third world country. While that is a compelling and reasonable argument, the cost is too great.
